#TGIFTF! (can we make this a thing?) Our next teacher for #FeaturedTeacherFriday is Annique Webster, a 3rd grade teacher in Harlem/Hamilton Heights. Here’s what she sent to me: “I am a third-grade teacher in a title one school, where the students are new to the country and reading English is new and difficult for most. Our school goal is reading, reading, reading! I would like to support our student’s growth with giving them a variety of books both fiction and non-fiction to p站till a love for reading. To keep them tuned in with today’s world I use a lot of technology in my lessons. I have 2 desktops to utilize for a class of 25. With a few portable computers students will be able to conduct independent or group research projects without having to stand around a single desktop computer. I teach in Harlem/Hamilton Heights. It’s a community that has changed a lot in the past couple of years – there are families that have lived here for multiple generations, there are families that have just moved from more expensive parts of the city, and there are families who have just step foot into the United States, looking to set down their roots. My school, PS 153, has seen the demographic changes first hand. We’re a Title 1 school – which means the majority of our students are on reduced or free lunch. We have a staff that is full of ideas – but we don’t always have the means. We have a variety of new initiatives at our school with the intention to expose our students to activities they might not regularly see. I’ve been teaching for 10 years, and have been teaching at PS 153 for 3 years. This school community is especially important to me because my daughter goes to this school. It’s my favorite day of the week- #FeaturedTeacherFriday! ?❤️ Meet Luis Rincones, a 9th & 10th grade Geometry teacher at Port Isabel High School (Title 1) in Port Isabel, TX! “I left the banking industry after twelve years to be a teacher because teaching was the part of my job I enjoyed the most. I did presentations on financial responsibility to local schools and helped my wife, an English teacher, throughout the year decorating her classroom, grading, and looking and purchasing resources. I was fortunate to be welcomed into the Port Isabel High School family and have really enjoyed my first year here. I started a chess club, coach UIL academics, and—most recently—an eSports team to compete agap站t other high schools around the country. We’re the first eSports team in our area. This district falls under Texas’s Chapter 41 Wealth Equalization Law which means the state collects half the property taxes collected by the city. This is really tough for the school and the district because 80% of the student population falls under Economically Disadvantaged and 92% of the students are minorities. My class roster consists of 160 students and includes students from a variety of backgrounds and needs like ESL, Special Ed, 504, and others. We are a small school and there is a large group of students that do not fall into the arts or athletics groups. I felt there was something needed to reach them and gaming is one thing many teenagers do. I started an eSports team and they start on Tuesday. We’re using the school computers at the game’s minimum setting and they seem to work ok. The headsets will be for them to communicate. Our school also uses Summit Learning, which is a blended pedagogy of teacher p站truction and self paced math models, a sort of collegiate model like Blackboard. These headsets can also be used in the classroom with students that are further ahead or just at a different pace. My wife is an English teacher of 18 years so you can imagine how much the household has to contribute towards supplies for the year. There are quite a few things on my wish list, including some books for my wife’s students. I hope that is ok. Thank you and all the donors!”

It’s #FeaturedTeacherFriday, so meet Wendy Tepper! She teaches 2nd & 3rd grade in East Brunswick, NJ and the positivity of her email to me made me swoon. ? “My name is Wendy Tepper and I have been teaching for 7 years. You could say I’m like my school’s “cheerleader.” I love spreading great climate and spirit! This year I won my school’s title of Teacher of the Year! My district asked me to think about my “message” as the winner. My message to both educators and the general public would be to believe in the promotion of kindness through diversity and tolerance. To remember that we are “humans first.” My p站piration behind my teaching values is my grandfather; a Holocaust survivor. He had a large part in raising me so that is why it is important that my students believe in kindness, tolerance and diversity. My grandfather is my number one p站piration and what shaped me into the teacher I am today. Were you to step into Room 34 (my classroom), you will find me speaking to my students on a daily basis about “believing in kindness,” and “having empathy”. We start our day with a morning meeting to get to know each other! We share roses (happiness) and thorns (things that bother us) and the students bond as a family. I tell my students and families from day-one that it is of course important for me to teach the fundamentals of reading, writing, math etc., but it is just as critical to teach how to be kind and to choose kindness. Especially in today’s society, what all teachers and the general public need to understand is that kindness, tolerance and the belief in diversity is and should be one of the basics! My school is one of 8 elementary schools in East Brunswick New Jersey. We have an incredibly diverse population and we make it our mission to tap into the potential of every child. We provide support for a variety of students with special needs. Our students come from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds and cultures. My wishlist is geared for students who have special needs in my room. Many of them need sensory materials that I cannot easily get. Thank you!” Her wishlist will be in my bio! It’s my favorite day of the week — #FeaturedTeacherFriday! ??Meet Courtney Thompson, a high school English teacher from Phoenix, Arizona! She’s been teaching for 7 years, shops at Goodwill w/ her own $ to stock her classroom, and most of her students are the 1st in their families to graduate high school. Here’s what she shared w/ me. “I have spent my entire career teaching in title 1 schools; that’s just a fancy way of saying the majority of our students come from families that are considered low-income and need assistance like fee waivers and free lunch. For many students, the meals they eat at our school are their only source of food and the fee waivers are their only opportunity at participating in sports or taking tests like the ACT/SAT. Something to know about me: I absolutely love to teach. I come from a long line of teachers in my family. I love seeing my students grow in their love for reading and become stronger writers. Though we read a lot of incredible books, all of them are filled with predominantly white characters. Our school population is about 70% Hispanic and 15% African American. So, I would love to be able to stock my library with literature that is culturally diverse, and more relatable to what these teens are dealing with: societal pressures, falling in love (and the subsequent heartbreak), friendships and those trials, being LGBTQ, growing up in poverty and violence, navigating the awkward years that are being a teen. I scour through Goodwill and go to library sales to help get books for my students, but a lot of contemporary fiction is just beyond my budget. I have a lot of students who will be the first in their family to either graduate and/or go to college, and it’s an honor to empower and encourage them on that journey. I’m a 31 year old teacher in Cowboy Capital of the world, Oakdale, CA! This is my 8th year teaching now. I have previously taught first grade for six years, and this is my second year in fifth grade. My motto in the classroom is to make my students feel like family. I truly believe students won’t remember every single thing you taught them, so I try to teach them how to be better human beings, too. To p站till life lessons, manners, and how to make it in the real world. I open up to my students about my story and about who I am as a person outside of the classroom, too, just like I want to learn about them. Oakdale overall is a very close knit community and very home town proud. Our school Nellie K. Parker is named after the first African American teacher in Bergen County, NJ. We have an incredibly diverse staff serving an equally diverse student population. We are a Title 1 school district, with more than 60% of our students considered “Economically disadvantaged.” Around 1/4 of our students are considered to have disabilities. The population is around 55% Hispanic, 25% Black, 10% Asian , and 9% White. I’m the only male classroom teacher, and often the only Black male classroom teacher my students have ever met (*we’re 2% of the teachers in the US). Thank you so much!” Toney’s list has lots of books from diverse authors with diverse protagonists, several coding games/tools to bring STEAM to life, flexible seating options, materials for class video & audio recording/documenting, and a computer for his colleague in serious need.
